Graduate Practica & Field Placements

Rigorous internships for second year social work, marriage and family therapy and mental health counseling graduate students.

We believe that the best way to become an effective clinician is through a rich and challenging clinical experience.

The Brookline Center offers a comprehensive training program for graduate students in outpatient mental health. Our program accepts a number of graduate interns each year for intensive learning, practice, and supervision.

Because teaching and learning are core to the Center’s work, we take pride in providing supervision, weekly clinical training seminars, and weekly continuing education sessions. We welcome our interns as valued members of The Brookline Center’s clinical team, with opportunities to join the staff for plentiful learning seminars and collaboration. Our graduates gain broad, wide-ranging experience within the Center’s Outpatient Department providing individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, parent guidance, group therapy, and time-limited services, via telehealth, in-person at the Center, and in the community.

What sets our approach apart?

The Brookline Center provides deep experience in delivering both short-term and long-term outpatient care. Each intern receives two or more hours per week of clinical supervision, in the form of individual and group supervision.

As essential members of our clinical team, Brookline Center interns gain training in a wide range of modalities: individual, group, couples, and family therapy. Our staff clinicians value their engagement with interns, listening to their perspectives, and helping them experience the most rewarding internships possible. Our training is culturally responsive in a diverse community, cultivating a vibrant working environment and extending clinicians’ skills.

How it works

Depending on their graduate program’s weekly hour requirements, interns join us for an academic year (September- June), contributing to our mission of excellence in community mental health. Generally, this includes 12 to 15 hours of direct service, accompanied by weekly clinical individual and/or group supervision. Interns join clinical staff for weekly team meetings and optional weekly learning seminars and speaker series. Internships at the Brookline Center are unpaid.

Ideal candidates

The Brookline Center is committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our work. We welcome interns into our staff community, ensuring they are seamlessly integrated into our clinical teams. We seek interns who are passionate about providing affirming and culturally responsive care to clients from diverse backgrounds and identities, especially those who are systemically marginalized.

Interns will have the opportunity to provide clinical services in a variety of contexts, including individual therapy, couples and family therapy, and group therapy. We value flexibility, adaptability, and a deep commitment to cultural humility in meeting the needs of our community.

As part of our inclusive approach, we expect interns to engage with clients across the lifespan. We are also particularly interested in interns who want to develop expertise in couples and family therapy, including family work with young children. Together, we aim to create a supportive environment where all individuals feel seen, valued, and respected.
